Wednesday 3rd October

We were not impressed with our accommodation in Sale, Manchester so decided to skip their breakfasts and were on the road by 8am. Of course this meant we found ourselves in peak hour Manchester traffic finding our way to the Manchester ring road (motorway). However by 9 we were back on the motorway north speeding along at 70 miles an hour whilst the locals flew past us at goodness knows what speeds.

We stopped in at the Chester services for breakfast of coffee and Pain aux Raison’s.

Not too bad.

Back on the road we were heading for Keswick but we called into Kendal on the way and found the local cemetery where we were keen to find the headstones of Cath’s Aunty and Uncle. We were confronted with about 3 hectares of gravestones so started the process of walking up and down the rows. We were sure we would not find them but after about 30 minutes Catherine screamed “here they are”. It was a great feeling to find them so far from our homes in Australia.

We continued to Keswick which is one of our favourite places ( we have been here twice before). We are staying here for 3 nights and aiming to visit the plaques of Cath’s dad and grandparents in Mowbray ( an hour or so away) on the Solway Firth.

Keswick is a walkers paradise with dozens of outdoor shops and pubs. Had dinner in one pub last night – steak and ale pie and pint of Guinness ( heaven).
