Together with my friend Roger Morris and 10 others I was able to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in East Africa last week.
With the help of over 40 supporters under the banner of G Adventures our team of 12 all succeeded in reaching the summit.
Over the course of 7 days we walked over 70 kilometres moving up and down between 2500 and 4000 metres gradually acclimatising ourselves. Base camp saw us sleep at about 4500 metres . Rising at midnight we walked until dawn at 730 am to witness the sun coming up at Stella Point (100 metres lower than of the summit). Then onto the summit at 5895 metres. Then, after a wonderful 30 minutes of celebration at the summit we started back down the trail reaching base camp around midday for a 2 hour rest. Then, on further down for another few hours and sleeping again at around 3500 metres. The final day saw us return to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate to enjoy lunch and then a bus ride back to our hotel base in Moshi. My knees complained significantly on the long trip back down the mountain.
A wonderful experience with a great team of fellow walkers and a fantastic team of porters and skilled team leaders (Chief Experience Officers). Well done G adventures for putting this expedition together so well.
